Tallow, a beautifully old-world ingredient made by rendering beef or sheep fat, has become a star again in modern natural skincare.
It was once a staple in soaps and ointments, and now it's returning to small-batch balms and creams (like ours!) because its natural chemistry pairs wonderfully with human skin.

Tallow's fatty acids are a perfect match for your skin barrier
Tallow naturally contains long-chain saturated fats (palmitic and stearic acids) along with skin-loving unsaturated fats like oleic and linoleic acids. Oleic acid alone makes up 37–43% of tallow's fatty acids (SAGE Publications, 1990).
Your skin barrier — the stratum corneum — is built from fatty acids, ceramides, and cholesterol. When you use lipids that mirror what your skin already produces, they blend more easily into the barrier and help keep hydration in.
Recent reviews highlight this compatibility and suggest it's a major reason tallow may moisturise and support barrier health (Russell et al., 2024); (Earlia et al., 2019).

Helps reduce water loss & supports repair
Amazing for dry, stressed, or compromised skin
Your skin depends on a strong barrier to stay hydrated and healthy. Studies show that applying compatible lipids can help reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) — the process where moisture escapes through the skin.
Tallow acts as a semi-occlusive moisturiser, meaning it locks in hydration while allowing the skin to breathe. For dry, stressed, or compromised skin, these lipids help the natural repair process function more effectively.
While tallow isn't studied as extensively as ceramide creams, the broader lipid science strongly supports how it works (Knox & O'Boyle, 2021); (Earlia et al., 2019).

Naturally rich in anti-inflammatory vitamins
Tallow contains fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as conjugated fatty acids that may offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Reviews suggest that nutrient-dense lipids like these may soothe irritated or inflamed skin — though more controlled clinical studies are needed.
The 2024 scoping review on tallow highlights these promising early signs (Russell et al., 2024).

“Isn't animal fat bad for skin?” Science says no
Some people assume animal fats are heavy or irritating, but research shows that many animal-derived lipids are biocompatible when properly rendered.
A safety assessment concluded that beef tallow is safe in cosmetic use (SAGE Publications, 1990). More recent analysis found that tallow can be well tolerated on intact skin, especially when responsibly sourced and stabilised to prevent rancidity (Russell et al., 2024).

Great for formulation & surprisingly sustainable
Tallow has a naturally semi-solid texture that melts beautifully on skin, making it ideal for balms, creams, and salves. It spreads smoothly, carries oil-soluble actives well, and doesn't require heavy waxes or synthetic stabilisers.
From a sustainability view, using high-quality rendered by-product fats from ethically raised animals can reduce waste and resource use. Some analyses compare beef tallow with plant oils and highlight meaningful environmental trade-offs (Alejra Sataray-Rodriguez et al., 2025).
